Figuring out the best way to start a conversation is one of the most intimidating things a person faces when they are in situations where they have to interact with others.
Have you ever been on an elevator with complete strangers? What do most people do in such close quarters?
Most people will simply look down at the floor, or concentrate on the floor indicator lights as they climb upward, waiting for the box to reach their destination.
But what would happen if you used the best way to start a conversation?
Do you think you could engage them and invite them within the few seconds you have together on the elevator ride?
Let’s play this out…
Picture yourself, waiting for the elevator to arrive and the door to open, so you can step on and be whisked up to the 8th floor where you are enjoying a stay in your suite at the Carlton Ritz!
When the door opens, you find there is another couple already on the elevator who came up from the underground parking garage.
What do you say? What do you do?
What is the best way to start a conversation with the people you are now sharing an 8×10’ box?
Well, I learned this little tip from a former Nordstrom makeup counter employee. She said, that when she was going through the training to work at Nordstrom, they told her to walk out from behind the makeup counter, and approach strangers that were walking by. She was told to identify something that she liked about them and compliment them.
For example… you might say, “Oh, I like your shoes!” And then talk to them about their shoes – where they bought them, the awesome color, and what they like about them. Then, transition into, do they wear the shoes for business? What do they do? How long have they been doing that? Do they like what they do?
You continue asking questions to find out what their wants, needs and problems are, so you can be the solution. And then, say you have to go, but you are just wondering… are they open to something that didn’t interfere with their job?
So, the simple and best way to start a conversation is to compliment someone.
What is the best way to start a conversation if you’re marketing online?
Marketing online is a bit of a different animal. For our example, we’ll focus on Facebook.
Figuring out what the best way to start a conversation is similar. Your goal is to find out the needs, wants, and problems, so you can offer a solution. Whatever you do, don’t throw a pitch. That’s the fastest way to get your friendship blocked or unfriended.
The best way to start a conversation, is to be selective in who you are conversing with.
As a network marketer, you are someone who has a different mindset than people who have jobs. You are someone who has big goals and dreams and desires for freedom and financial success. So, you are better off looking for people with similar views.
These are people you will find in home based business groups or life coach groups, or financial guru groups. Once you find a group that is made up of like-minded people, start looking at the comments.
Look for people who are positive, who write short comments, are non-argumentative, show an indication of openness, and have a professional attitude – someone you would like to work with.
Next, take a look at the person’s profile and see if there is anything you have in common with them.
Send them a Private Message. Say you saw that “they love Robert Kiyosaki books – me too!” Then, as in the elevator example, begin to ask questions to build rapport. Ask them what they do, and get them to ask you what you do.
Say, “how will I know when I’m talking to someone that they would be a good prospect for you?” This question alone will tell you if they are the type of person you would like to have on your team.
Ask them how their business is working out for them. Offer your help in an area they say they are having trouble. It might be online marketing, or offline marketing. Say, “hey, my number is, 123-456-7890, call me if you have any questions. I’d like to have your number so I know who’s calling.
Since you are building rapport and sending messages back and forth, and they know you work with people to show them how to do online and offline marketing, and you mentor people in (whatever your MLM is), ask them if you can send them a video about what you are doing.
You are building trust with your online and offline prospects.
These two examples illustrate the best way to start a conversation, online or offline
